Check the light bulb and socket first
The most common reason the light inside a refrigerator stops working is a burned-out bulb. Even though this may seem obvious, it is often overlooked because the rest of the refrigerator continues to function normally. Cooling performance is separate from the internal lighting circuit, so a failed bulb does not affect temperature.
Start by unplugging the refrigerator for safety. Locate the light cover, which is usually a plastic shield near the top interior. Remove it carefully, as some covers are held in place by clips that can break if forced. Once exposed, unscrew the bulb and inspect it. A darkened glass or broken filament indicates failure, but even if the bulb looks intact, it may still be defective.
Replace the bulb with one that matches the original wattage and type. Using the wrong bulb can cause overheating or damage to the socket. After installing the new bulb, restore power and open the door to test it.
If the new bulb does not light up, the issue may be the socket. Check for corrosion, discoloration, or bent contacts inside the socket. These signs suggest poor electrical contact. In some cases, gently adjusting the metal tab in the socket can restore connection, but if the socket is damaged, it may need replacement.
It is important not to skip this step. Many lighting issues are resolved here, and moving on too quickly can lead to unnecessary troubleshooting.
